Surmodics introduces Pounce XL thrombectomy system
Surmodics has officially launched its Pounce XL thrombectomy system for commercial use following a successful limited market release that began in January 2025. Approved by the US FDA in September 2024 via 510(k) clearance, Pounce XL is designed for removing clots in peripheral arteries ranging from 5.5mm to 10mm—ideal for iliac and femoral vessels. Clinical cases demonstrated effective clot removal from the infrarenal aorta and common iliac arteries in just three passes.
The device expands Surmodics’ thrombectomy portfolio, which includes the original Pounce and Pounce LP systems for arteries between 2mm and 6mm. Pounce XL offers a surgical-free, deployable solution that eliminates the need for capital equipment, aspiration, or thrombolytics, reducing patient risk and procedure time.
Surmodics also leads in hydrophilic coatings for medical devices. In May 2024, it announced a $627 million acquisition deal with GTCR, which was later challenged by the FTC over antitrust concerns involving competitor Biocoat.
