Medtronic Expands MiniMed 780G Insulin Pump Indications and Sensor Compatibility

Medtronic has received FDA approval to expand its MiniMed 780G insulin pump indications. The pump can now be paired with Abbott’s upcoming Instinct continuous glucose monitor (CGM), marking the first time the device can integrate with a non-Medtronic sensor. The Instinct CGM offers a 15-day wear time and is designed to be compact and thin.

Additionally, the FDA has approved the 780G for use in adults with Type 2 diabetes when paired with Medtronic sensors, including the Guardian 4 CGM and Simplera Sync (six-day wear). These approvals follow Medtronic’s SmartGuard algorithm receiving interoperable automated glycemic controller (iAGC) designation for Type 1 diabetes.

The companies plan to finalize regulatory compliance and marketing submissions in the coming weeks. These expansions precede Medtronic’s planned spin-out of its diabetes business as a standalone publicly traded company, to be named MiniMed.
