Post Graduate Diploma in Ayurvedic Pharmacology (Dravyaguna) (PGAP/EAP)

The PG Diploma in Ayurvedic Pharmacology is a postgraduate-level programme designed to provide in-depth knowledge of Ayurvedic drugs, medicinal plants, and traditional formulations, along with their pharmacological actions, safety, quality, and therapeutic applications.

The course integrates classical Ayurvedic concepts (such as Dravyaguna, Rasa Shastra, and Bhaishajya Kalpana) with modern pharmacology, phytochemistry, quality control, and regulatory principles. It aims to scientifically validate Ayurvedic medicines while preserving traditional wisdom.

Module 2: Dravyaguna Vigyana (Ayurvedic Materia Medica & Pharmacognosy)

  • Detailed study on the Rasa, Guna, Virya, Vipaka, Prabhava
  • Applied aspects in: Disease management, Drug selection, Formulation planning

(This develops conceptual clarity of pharmacodynamic principles governing Ayurvedic drug action.)

Module 3: Karma Siddhanta and Therapeutic Evaluation

  • Concept of Karma in Ayurveda
  • Detailed evaluation of: Deepana, Pachana, Grahi, Stambhana, Mutrala, Mutrasangrahaniya, Anulomana, Rechana, Jwaraghna, Vedanahara
  • Correlation of Karma with Dosha, Dhatu & Mala& Clinical application of karma

Module 4: Aushadha Prayoga Vigyan – Drug Administration

  • Aushadha Prayoga Marga (routes of administration) & Prayoga Vidhi of Dravya
  • Concepts of: Matra, Kala, Anupana
  • Drug delivery regimens & Factors affecting drug action: Desha, Kala, Rogi–Roga bala

      (This provides scientific knowledge on cultivation, collection, storage, and marketing of ASU drugs.)

Module 7: Anukta Dravya, Controversies & Adulteration

  • Concept of Anukta Dravya (extra-pharmacopeial drugs)
  • Controversial Ayurvedic drugs
  • Adulteration of crude drugs & Substitutes (Abhava Pratinidhi Dravya) 

(To develop critical understanding of extra-pharmacopeial drugs, controversies, and adulteration issues.)

Module 8: Standardization & Safety Evaluation of Ayurvedic Drugs

  • Standardization concepts in Ayurveda
  • Ayurvedic Pharmacopeia of India (API) & Ayurvedic Formulary of India (AFI)
  • Toxicological evaluation of drugs & Safety evaluation guidelines: OECD & WHO

Module 9: Pharmacovigilance & Drug Safety Monitoring

  • Monitoring adverse reactions, reporting systems
  • Introduction to relevant portions of Drugs and Cosmetic Act, Magic remedies Act, regulations pertaining import and export of drugs.

(This is increasingly emphasized in modern Ayurvedic training.)

  • Drugs & Cosmetics Act (relevant portions) & Magic Remedies Act

Eligibility

Graduates in Ayurveda (BAMS), Pharmacy, Life Sciences, Medical or Allied Health Sciences

Programme Duration

 The minimum duration to complete the PG diploma programme is 12 months and maximum is 24 months. The minimum duration to complete the executive diploma programme is 6 months and maximum is 12 months.

Programme Deliverables

A comprehensive study material for all the modules in hard copies ensuring the needs of the audience. The accompanying training material is appropriately aligned with the current Industry’s expectations.

  • Assignments for all the programme modules for continuous evaluation and guidance.
  • Interactive or online live sessions on all key areas of the programme giving all flexibility to the participants.
  • Online Live Classes/Part-time for all the modules will be conducted on the weekends. Moreover, a doubt clearing session will also be scheduled before the examination.
  • All the efforts are made by IGMPI faculty members to make the entire programme modules easily understandable.
  • Assessment and evaluation for all the programme modules in order to enhance the levels of competencies and skills of the participants leading towards the objective of application in the job.
  • At the end of each programme modules, the trainers shall obtain feedback from the participants using specially designed questionnaires.
  • All learning and training delivery initiatives shall be conducted in English.

Examination & Certification

All the participants are expected to appear for an online exam and are also obliged to submit assignments after each module. After successful completion, the participants will be awarded Post Graduate Diploma in Ayurvedic Pharmacology by Centre for Health Management and Research, IGMPI. For all the above mentioned modules elaborate programme material, self-assessment assignments and project work details would be provided by the Institute from time to time. Every student is required to observe a disciplined behaviour during her/his classes, assessments & examinations and to follow instructions from the Professors. Any act of indiscipline may result into discredit & it will be mentioned in her/his academic report.

After completing a PG Diploma in Ayurvedic Pharmacology, graduates can work in the Ayurvedic and herbal pharmaceutical industry, research organisations, quality control laboratories, regulatory and drug safety units, and public health or AYUSH programmes. They may take up roles such as Ayurvedic pharmacology associate, research assistant, quality control or quality assurance officer, pharmacovigilance associate, regulatory affairs executive, formulation or production executive, or work with NGOs and wellness or nutraceutical companies. The course also provides a foundation for higher studies and research in pharmacology, herbal sciences, or Ayurveda-related disciplines.
