WHO Sets Global Research Priorities for Paediatric Clinical Trials

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a technical report, The Future of Paediatric Clinical Trials – Setting Research Priorities for Child Health, outlining a global research agenda for studies involving children up to nine years old. Developed with input from over 380 stakeholders contributing 653 research questions, the process identified 172 key priorities across areas such as infectious and non-communicable diseases, nutrition, newborn health, and early childhood development.

The agenda aims to close major evidence gaps caused by the underrepresentation of children in clinical trials, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. WHO Science for Health Director Dr. Meg Doherty emphasized that the report provides clear guidance for aligning investments and fostering global collaboration. WHO will assist in implementing the agenda by supporting dialogue, building research capacity, and mobilizing funding with Member States and partners. Major research funders have also pledged to align with WHO trial standards by 2025.
