New guidance from King’s College London suggests eating 2–3 kiwi fruits a day or 8–10 prunes can help relieve constipation, a condition affecting 1 in 10 people. The advice emphasizes fruit, mineral water, and magnesium supplements over focusing solely on high-fibre diets or probiotics.
Kiwi fruit, whether eaten with or without skin, increases stool volume and water content, promoting bowel contractions and softer stools. Mineral water is preferred over tap water due to its magnesium content, which has a natural laxative effect. Magnesium oxide supplements also reduce bloating, lower tummy pain, straining, and make bowel movements easier.
Probiotics may help some symptoms, but evidence is limited. The guidelines are based on 75 clinical trials and provide an evidence-based, diet-focused approach for doctors, dietitians, and patients to improve wellbeing and quality of life.
