The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), in collaboration with the Karnataka government, Karnataka State Mental Health Authority (KSMHA), and Department of Education, is addressing the mental health impacts of excessive digital technology use among students. Rising screen time has been linked to reduced attention spans, weakened social interactions, and increased risk of mobile and computer game addiction.
The initiative focuses on preventive and promotive digital health practices, including age-specific guidelines, school digital use policies, formation of digital safety committees, and mandatory awareness sessions for teachers, parents, and students. Stakeholders—including NGOs, mental health experts, and educators—are contributing to policy development and implementation strategies.
Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao emphasized identifying red flags, regulating technology use, and fostering ethical practices. Experts advocate involving students in designing solutions and promoting cyber literacy programs, aiming to create a balanced and healthy digital environment in educational settings.
