A new study in the Journal of the American Heart Association reveals that pizza, soup, and chicken are top sodium sources across all U.S. racial and ethnic groups, though cultural differences influence sodium intake. Using data from NHANES (2017–2020), researchers found that Asian Americans often consumed sodium through soy-based condiments and stir-fries, Mexican Americans through traditional dishes like enchiladas and tamales, and Black adults through processed chicken items.
While nearly all U.S. adults exceed the recommended sodium intake of 2,300 mg/day, Black adults were most likely to try reducing sodium and receive physician advice. A key finding revealed that assuming salted rice may have led to overestimating sodium intake among Asian Americans by 325 mg/day.
Experts urge culturally sensitive sodium reduction strategies and recommend low-sodium alternatives, potassium-rich vegetables, and salt substitutes, while cautioning those with kidney concerns to consult a healthcare provider.
