Egg prices have jumped by 25–50 per cent in several parts of the country, driven by strong winter demand and rising costs faced by poultry farmers, according to industry sources. Consumption typically increases during colder months due to perceived health benefits and higher demand from households, bakeries, hotels and institutions. Limited short-term supply has amplified the price rise in both wholesale and retail markets.
Traders report steady increases in major cities including Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru, with retail prices touching Rs 8–10 per egg, up from Rs 5–6 earlier. Elevated feed costs such as maize and soybean meal, along with higher transport and electricity expenses, have added to the pressure. Reduced flock sizes and delayed restocking have kept supplies tight. Prices are expected to remain firm through peak winter before easing later.
