Global Study Reveals the Most Effective Foods for Hangover Recovery

Fresh insights from health and nutrition app Lifesum reveal which foods help the body recover from hangovers most efficiently. Using its annual Hangover Nutrition Index, Lifesum analysed popular post-drinking meals across 10 countries, assessing them for hydration, nutrient density and digestive support. Japan secured the top spot, with miso soup served alongside rice and pickles emerging as a leading recovery choice. Packed with electrolytes, probiotics and minimal fat, the dish supports rehydration and gut balance. Korea and Sweden followed closely, favouring light, broth-based meals with vegetables, lean proteins and essential minerals.

In contrast, heavy breakfasts commonly eaten in the US and UK ranked at the bottom. Greasy fry-ups and full English breakfasts, high in saturated fat and calories, may increase dehydration and digestive discomfort. Nutrition experts stress that effective hangover relief depends on hydration, micronutrient balance and gentle digestion rather than rich, indulgent foods.
