Dairy Intake Linked to Nightmares in Lactose-Intolerant Students, Study Finds

New research suggests that dairy consumption may worsen sleep quality and trigger nightmares—particularly in lactose-intolerant individuals. A study of over 1,000 students at MacEwan University found strong associations between digestive discomfort from dairy and disturbed REM sleep, leading to vivid or negative dreams. Roughly one-third of participants reported frequent nightmares, and women were more likely to experience poor sleep, remember dreams, and report food intolerances. While only 5.5% directly linked diet to dream content, many named sweets, spicy foods, or dairy as possible triggers for disturbing dreams. Scientists believe gastrointestinal distress from lactose intolerance may interfere with sleep and dream regulation, increasing the severity and frequency of nightmares. These findings highlight how food sensitivities may influence mental and physical rest. Researchers suggest dietary adjustments for those with intolerances could improve both sleep quality and emotional well-being. The study reinforces the complex link between diet, digestion, and dreaming.
