Eating more fruits and vegetables to decrease dietary acid lowers blood pressure and improves heart and kidney health in patients with hypertension

Doctors recommend including fruits and vegetables as a key part of hypertension treatment. Diets rich in these foods lower blood pressure, reduce cardiovascular risks, and improve kidney health. A study in *The American Journal of Medicine* conducted a five-year trial with 153 hypertensive patients, comparing three groups: one adding 2-4 cups of fruits and vegetables daily, another taking sodium bicarbonate tablets, and a third receiving standard care. Results showed that while both fruits and vegetables and sodium bicarbonate improved kidney health, only fruits and vegetables lowered blood pressure and reduced cardiovascular risk.

The study suggests starting treatment with a diet high in fruits and vegetables, adding medication as needed. Patients with hypertension are advised to have their urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) checked to assess kidney health and cardiovascular risk.
