First study to link certain diets to age of menarche: A healthy diet in childhood is associated with starting menstrual periods later, regardless of BMI or height

A new study published in Human Reproduction links healthy childhood diets to a later onset of menstruation, regardless of BMI or height. Researchers analyzed data from over 7,500 girls, aged 9 to 14, in the U.S.-based Growing Up Today Study (GUTS). Girls with healthier diets—rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains—were less likely to start menstruating early compared to those with diets high in processed and inflammatory foods. The study used two scoring systems: the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) and the Empirical Dietary Inflammatory Pattern (EDIP). Girls with the healthiest diets were 8% less likely to begin menstruation early, while those with highly inflammatory diets were 15% more likely. Lead author emphasized the broader health impacts, noting early menarche is linked to higher risks of diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and breast cancer. The findings suggest dietary habits—not body size—may play a key role in reproductive health and long-term disease risk.
