Flavanol-Rich Foods Protect Blood Vessels During Prolonged Sitting

New research from the University of Birmingham shows that consuming flavanol-rich foods can prevent the decline in vascular function caused by prolonged sitting, even in physically fit men. Flavanols, naturally found in cocoa, berries, apples, nuts, and tea, were tested in a study of 40 healthy young men. Participants drank either high- or low-flavanol cocoa before sitting for two hours. Those who consumed the high-flavanol beverage maintained healthy blood flow and arterial function, while those with the low-flavanol drink experienced reduced vascular function, higher blood pressure, and lower leg muscle oxygenation.

The study highlights that baseline fitness alone does not protect against sitting-induced vascular impairment. Adding flavanol-rich foods to daily routines offers a simple, practical approach to support long-term cardiovascular health. Combined with periodic movement, these dietary strategies could help counter the hidden risks of sedentary lifestyles.
