New research highlights how plant-based flavonoids regulate gut hormones like GLP-1 and ghrelin, offering a natural approach to managing type 2 diabetes (T2DM). A recent review in Exploratory Research and Hypothesis in Medicine discusses their role in insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism.
Flavonoids, such as cyanidin-3-O-glucoside and naringin, improve insulin signaling and reduce oxidative stress, protecting pancreatic β-cells. They also influence gut hormones like GLP-1, GIP, and CCK, enhancing insulin secretion and appetite regulation. Compounds like chlorogenic acid and hispidulin boost GLP-1 levels, improving blood sugar control.
Additionally, flavonoids impact ghrelin secretion, which affects appetite and glucose metabolism. Quercetin 3-O-malonylglucoside and phloretin increase ghrelin levels, potentially improving insulin sensitivity.
While flavonoids show promise for T2DM management, further long-term studies are needed to confirm their effectiveness and safety for clinical use.
