A 16-week randomized cross-over trial by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine found that a low-fat vegan diet significantly reduced dietary acid load and led to weight loss, while the Mediterranean diet showed no impact on weight. The study, published in Frontiers in Nutrition, involved 62 overweight adults who alternated between both diets. Participants on the vegan plan lost an average of 13.2 pounds, while also lowering acid load scores—markers linked to inflammation and metabolic disruption. In contrast, the Mediterranean diet produced no notable changes in weight or acidity. Researchers attribute the results to replacing animal-based foods—like meat, eggs, and dairy—with alkaline, plant-based options such as leafy greens, legumes, and berries. Lead author noted that reducing acid-forming foods may help curb inflammation and support gut health. The study emphasizes the metabolic benefits of a plant-based diet, particularly for weight management and reducing inflammation-related risks.
