A new study from King’s College London suggests that following a Mediterranean-style diet may protect against gum disease and reduce inflammation. Published in the Journal of Periodontology, the research analyzed 200 hospital patients who underwent dental exams, blood tests, and dietary assessments.
Patients consuming diets high in red meat showed more severe gum disease and higher levels of inflammatory markers such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP). In contrast, those whose diets emphasized plant-based foods typical of the Mediterranean diet—such as legumes, vegetables, fruits, and olive oil—displayed lower levels of systemic inflammation.
The Mediterranean diet, already known to lower the risk of heart disease, neurodegenerative disorders, and certain cancers, may also play a key role in periodontal health. Researchers emphasized the need for further studies to develop personalized dietary strategies to support gum health, highlighting the strong link between nutrition, inflammation, and oral disease.
