Multivitamins and Blood Pressure: Benefits Limited to Nutritionally At-Risk Seniors

A new analysis from Mass General Brigham suggests that long-term daily multivitamin use may offer modest blood pressure benefits—but only for certain older adults. Drawing on data from the COcoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study (COSMOS), researchers examined nearly 9,000 adults aged 65 and above who did not have hypertension at the start of the trial. Overall, multivitamin use did not significantly reduce blood pressure or hypertension risk compared with placebo.

However, subgroup analysis revealed small yet meaningful improvements among participants with poorer diet quality and normal baseline blood pressure. In these individuals, daily multivitamin use was associated with a lower risk of developing hypertension and slight reductions in blood pressure over two years.

Researchers emphasize that multivitamins are not a universal solution for blood pressure control but may support cardiovascular health in older adults with nutritional gaps. Further studies are needed to determine whether similar benefits extend to younger populations or those with different dietary profiles.
