A recent study from the University of Surrey offers another reason to enjoy tea or dark chocolate: compounds called flavan-3-ols—naturally present in cocoa, tea, apples, and grapes—may support heart health. Published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, the research reviewed 145 randomized controlled trials and found that regular intake of flavan-3-ols can lower blood pressure, especially in people with elevated or high readings.
In some cases, the effects were similar to those of certain medications. Additionally, flavan-3-ols improved endothelial function—the inner lining of blood vessels—independent of changes in blood pressure, pointing to broader cardiovascular benefits.
Lead author noted that adding flavan-3-ol-rich foods to a balanced diet could be a simple, enjoyable way to support heart health. While not a substitute for medical treatment, these findings suggest that small daily dietary changes may play a helpful role in managing blood pressure and promoting vascular health.
