Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Lower Risk of Nearsightedness in Children, Study Finds

A study of over 1,000 Chinese children suggests that a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids, commonly found in fish oils, may protect against nearsightedness (myopia), while diets rich in saturated fats may raise the risk. Published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, the research analyzed data from 6–8-year-olds in the Hong Kong Children Eye Study.

Children’s diets were recorded using food frequency questionnaires, and their eye health was measured, including axial length and refractive error. Results showed that children with the highest omega-3 intake had shorter axial lengths and less severe myopia, even after accounting for factors like screen time, outdoor activity, and parental myopia. Conversely, those with the highest saturated fat intake had longer axial lengths and worse vision outcomes.

Although observational, the findings suggest omega-3s may protect eye health by improving blood flow in the eye and reducing oxygen deficiency in key tissues.
