Two plant-based diets—the Planetary Health Diet (PHD) and the Mediterranean Diet—were linked to lower mortality and low environmental impact, according to findings presented at ESC Preventive Cardiology 2025. Researchers analyzed data from over 11,000 participants in Spain, tracking dietary habits and mortality over 14.4 years. Those with the highest adherence to the PHD had a 22% lower risk of death, while those closely following the Mediterranean Diet had a 21% lower risk, compared to those with the lowest adherence. Both diets emphasize high intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, while limiting red meat and added sugars. Environmental assessments showed similarly low greenhouse gas emissions (around 4.15–4.36 kg CO₂/day) and land use (about 5.5 m²/day). The study highlights that both diets are effective for promoting longevity and sustainability, offering a clear benefit to individuals and the planet alike.
