A new study suggests that eating a variety of flavonoid-rich foods—like tea, berries, dark chocolate, and apples—may reduce the risk of chronic diseases and extend lifespan. Researchers from Queen’s University Belfast, Edith Cowan University, and others tracked over 120,000 people aged 40–70 for more than 10 years.
The study, published in Nature Food, highlights that not just the amount but the diversity of flavonoids matters. Found in plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, tea, and even red wine, flavonoids are known for lowering the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and neurological conditions.
Different flavonoids offer unique benefits—like improving blood pressure or reducing inflammation. For the first time, official dietary guidelines now recommend increasing flavonoid intake to support long-term health.
