The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) is launching a nationwide sensitisation initiative, including webinars and training sessions, to educate officials from blood centres on quality and safety standards for blood and blood components. Under the Drugs Rules, 1945, blood and its components are classified as drugs, requiring strict regulatory oversight.
The IPC has developed comprehensive quality standards and monographs to minimise transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) and ensure all blood products meet rigorous safety benchmarks. The first national webinar will be held on November 7, 2025, featuring experts from the IPC, regulatory bodies, and transfusion medicine.
Sessions will focus on implementing the GSR 166(E) Drugs and Cosmetic (Second Amendment) Rules, 2020, and aligning practices with national and international quality frameworks. The programme aims to strengthen regulatory compliance, enhance patient safety, and build public trust in India’s blood transfusion services.
