Toxic Impurity Found in Cough Syrup Triggers Nationwide Regulatory Action

A nationwide health alert has been issued after the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) detected diethylene glycol (DEG), a toxic impurity, in a batch of Planokuf D Syrup manufactured by Shreya Lifesciences Pvt. Ltd. in Uttarakhand. Tests by the Regional Drugs Testing Laboratory found 0.35% DEG, exceeding the permissible 0.1% limit, rendering the batch adulterated under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.

In response, the Haryana Drugs Control Administration (DCA), led by State Drugs Controller Lalit Kumar Goel, issued a “Most Urgent” alert, directing officials to seize affected stocks and monitor market circulation. Recognising DEG’s severe toxicity, the DCA also reinforced mandatory Gas Chromatography testing of propylene glycol (PG) to prevent contamination. Haryana further extended these safety protocols to Ayurvedic manufacturers, ensuring cross-sector vigilance. These swift, coordinated measures underscore India’s intensified commitment to drug safety and supply chain integrity.
