PhysioBiometrics Unveils Heel2Toe Device to Improve Gait and Mobility in Older Adults

Canada’s PhysioBiometrics, an AGE-WELL network affiliate, has launched Heel2Toe, a wearable device designed to enhance walking patterns in older adults. Attached to the side of a shoe, the device emits an auditory cue with each heel strike, training users to adopt a proper heel-first gait. This feedback helps reduce joint strain, improve balance, and lower the risk of falls. Developed by Dr. Nancy Mayo and physiotherapist co-founders with McGill University’s biomedical engineering team, Heel2Toe has shown benefits for individuals with neurological and orthopaedic conditions, including Parkinson’s disease. The device includes training videos, exercises, and a dashboard for gait analytics. In a pilot trial, 13 of 14 Parkinson’s patients using Heel2Toe improved their six-minute walk test performance. It is also integrated into PhysioBiometrics’ Walk-BEST rehabilitation programme.
