Vicarious Surgical has partnered with a digital engineering and software services firm to accelerate development of its single-port robotic system for abdominal procedures. Under the agreement, the partner will handle key software engineering tasks, including control systems, visualization, and workflow components, while Vicarious retains core features like its miniaturized robotic arms and immersive visualization in-house.
The collaboration aims to improve execution, increase development predictability, and reduce operating costs. Vicarious previously delayed a clinical trial and FDA de novo submission, initially planned for late 2026, to focus on completing the robot’s commercial design.
The Waltham, Massachusetts-based company sees a large opportunity, with 82% of over 5.6 million U.S. abdominal procedures still performed via open or laparoscopic surgery. Cost-management measures have lowered projected cash burn to $45 million in 2025 and $35 million in 2026, with an estimated $25 million needed to finalize the robot’s design. Investors include Bill Gates, Khosla Ventures, and AME Cloud Ventures.
