Montana State University (MSU) researchers have developed TrialWear, a wearable device designed to improve the safety and efficiency of clinical trials. The device sends text notifications prompting participants to present a unique code to healthcare workers during medical visits, preventing treatment conflicts that could jeopardize trial participation.
TrialWear particularly supports patients in rural areas, who often face coordination challenges with larger hospitals. By digitally storing participant information—including medications, study restrictions, and guidelines—the device replaces paper cards that were easily lost.
Following extensive testing and patient feedback, the final prototype was completed in July 2025. MSU’s Technology Transfer Office is managing commercialization, with plans for hospital distribution, while Bozeman’s A&E Design is developing the packaging. Funding has come from multiple sources, including the NIH, NSF, American Nurses Association, and an MSU Venture grant, with a $5 million proposal submitted to the National Cancer Institute to expand clinical collaborations.
Originally envisioned as a wrist bracelet, the design was refined using insights from nurse eye-tracking studies.
