Herbal medicinal products (HMPs) must comply with strict Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards under frameworks like the EU GMP Guidelines and national laws such as AMWHV, alongside GACP guidelines for cultivation.
Quality must be controlled across all stages—from raw plant materials to finished products. Cultivation, harvesting, and initial processing fall under GACP, while extraction, drying, and manufacturing follow GMP. All processes must be validated, with full traceability and documentation.
Products must meet pharmacopoeial standards like the European Pharmacopoeia, ensuring identity, purity, and potency. Testing includes contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, mycotoxins, and microbes. Stability programs aligned with ICH guidelines are required to confirm shelf life.
Decontamination methods may be used cautiously but cannot replace proper practices. Overall, GMP ensures consistent quality, safety, and efficacy of herbal medicinal products.
