Medical cannabis must meet strict Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards, similar to other pharmaceutical products. In Europe, these are governed by the EU GMP Guidelines and national laws like AMWHV, alongside GACP guidelines for cultivation.
Quality must be ensured across all stages—from growing and harvesting to processing, packaging, and distribution. Processes such as drying, extraction, trimming, and curing require validation to guarantee consistency. Strict documentation, traceability, and quality systems are mandatory throughout the supply chain.
Cannabis products must comply with standards like the European Pharmacopoeia, covering identity, potency, and contaminants such as pesticides, heavy metals, and microbes. Stability testing is also required to confirm shelf life.
Decontamination methods like irradiation may be used with approval, but cannot replace proper practices. Overall, GMP ensures safe, high-quality, and consistent medical cannabis products.
