A new study published in Aging Clinical and Experimental Research reveals that the combination of abdominal fat and low muscle mass—known as sarcopenic obesity—can significantly increase mortality risk. Researchers found that individuals with both conditions were 83% more likely to die compared to those with neither.
The study, conducted by Federal University of São Carlos in collaboration with University College London, analyzed 12 years of data from over 5,400 adults aged 50+ in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing.
Unlike standalone obesity or muscle loss, this combination creates a dangerous cycle. Excess fat promotes inflammation, which accelerates muscle breakdown, while fat infiltration weakens muscle function further.
Encouragingly, researchers found that simple tools like waist measurement and basic body metrics can help detect this condition early—making prevention more accessible through nutrition and exercise interventions.
The findings highlight the importance of maintaining both healthy body composition and muscle strength for long-term survival and quality of life.
