Collagen Supplements May Improve Skin Health but Won’t Eliminate Wrinkles

Collagen supplements may provide modest benefits for skin health, but they are not a miracle solution for ageing, according to a new scientific review. Collagen, a protein naturally produced by the body, supports skin, bones, and connective tissues, but its production declines with age.

The review, published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum, analyzed 113 clinical trials involving nearly 8,000 participants. Researchers from Anglia Ruskin University found that regularly taking collagen supplements can improve skin elasticity and hydration, which may contribute to a more youthful appearance.

Lead researcher noted that while collagen offers “credible benefits” when used consistently, it should not be viewed as a cure-all for ageing or wrinkles. The study also suggests collagen supplements may help reduce joint pain and stiffness related to osteoarthritis.

Experts emphasize that a balanced diet rich in nutrients like vitamin C and zinc also plays an important role in supporting the body’s natural collagen production.
