Vegetarian Diets and Longevity: Weight May Matter More Than Meat

A long-term study of older adults suggests that vegetarians over age 80 may be slightly less likely to reach 100 than those who eat meat—but the relationship appears more nuanced than it first seems. Researchers analyzed data from more than 5,000 participants in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, a nationwide study that has tracked aging patterns in China since 1998.

Initial results showed that non-meat eaters were somewhat less likely to become centenarians. However, the difference was seen only among participants who were underweight. Older adults of healthy weight showed no such disadvantage, suggesting body weight plays a critical role in longevity.

As people age, maintaining muscle mass and preventing malnutrition becomes increasingly important. Foods such as fish, eggs, and dairy provide nutrients like protein, vitamin B12, calcium, and vitamin D that support bone and muscle health.

Researchers emphasize that plant-based diets can remain healthy in later life but may require careful planning to ensure adequate nutrition.
