A new study published in Nature Communications has uncovered how a key protein system activates brown fat, potentially paving the way for innovative obesity treatments focused on boosting metabolism rather than suppressing appetite.
Unlike white fat, which stores energy, brown fat burns calories to generate heat through a process called thermogenesis. Researchers found that a protein called SLIT3 plays a central role by helping brown fat develop essential networks of blood vessels and nerves.
The protein is split by the enzyme BMP1 into two parts—one promotes blood vessel growth, while the other supports nerve development. Another receptor, PLXNA1, helps regulate this process. Together, these components ensure brown fat functions efficiently.
This discovery highlights a promising shift toward therapies that increase energy expenditure, offering a new strategy to combat obesity and improve metabolic health.
