Even before U.S. forces seized Venezuela’s president, Donald Trump reiterated his long-standing interest in Greenland, citing national security and access to resources. The Danish autonomous territory is rich in oil, gas, and rare earth minerals, though extraction is limited by harsh climate and strict environmental laws.
Following Trump’s statements, European leaders from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the U.K. emphasized that Greenland’s security must be addressed through NATO cooperation and affirmed the island’s sovereignty. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt indicated discussions on purchasing Greenland were ongoing, with “all options” on the table.
Greenland’s mineral deposits, including uranium-linked rare earth elements, face legal, environmental, and technical barriers. While some U.S. and foreign companies hold permits, few projects have progressed. Officials stress strict regulations and local opposition protect the environment.
Experts warn the territory’s massive ice sheet poses a global climate risk, independent of geopolitical control, as melting continues from fossil fuel-driven warming.
