Report Warns Rollbacks of Pollution Rules Could Raise Toxic Exposure in U.S.

A new report from the Environmental Protection Network warns that efforts to weaken pollution protections could increase public exposure to harmful chemicals across the United States. The “Terrible Toxics Situation Report,” released as part of the Safer, Not Sicker campaign, highlights potential health risks linked to reduced environmental safeguards.

According to the report, policy changes under Donald Trump could weaken rules aimed at controlling smog and particulate pollution, particularly affecting urban areas such as Las Vegas. The findings also point to concerns about toxic substances including arsenic, benzene, lead, pesticides and PFAS chemicals.

Healthcare advocates warn that higher pollution levels could lead to increased cases of respiratory illnesses, developmental issues and certain cancers. The Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments said reduced safeguards may worsen asthma and lung disease rates, especially among children.

Experts also highlighted contamination risks in private water wells and ongoing debates over particulate matter standards managed by the Environmental Protection Agency.
