Environmental organisations are urging a wider cleanup after a major sewage spill near Washington, D.C. contaminated sections of the Potomac River. The incident occurred on 19 January 2026 when a section of the aging Potomac Interceptor collapsed in Montgomery County, Maryland, releasing up to 300 million gallons of untreated wastewater over nearly a week.
The damaged pipeline transports sewage from northern Virginia to the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant. While officials say drinking water supplies remain unaffected, environmental groups argue that the cleanup should extend far beyond the immediate spill zone and nearby shoreline.
Utility provider DC Water plans to focus first on areas closest to the rupture before restoring parts of the historic Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. Authorities estimate repairs and cleanup may cost around $20 million, with federal disaster assistance covering up to 75% of expenses.
