California’s vast agricultural sector relies heavily on young workers, many of whom endure difficult and sometimes unsafe conditions. In regions such as the Salinas Valley, teenagers harvest crops like strawberries for long hours under intense heat. Some begin working as early as 11 or 12 to support their families, often earning piece-rate wages that can fall below minimum wage. Interviews with dozens of young field workers revealed frequent exposure to pesticides, limited access to shade or clean sanitation, and physically demanding tasks. Many reported headaches, dizziness, or injuries but avoided reporting problems for fear of losing their jobs. Despite California’s strict labour and safety regulations, enforcement remains inconsistent. Inspections are limited, complaints often go uninvestigated, and penalties against employers are rarely collected. Researchers estimate that between 5,000 and 10,000 minors may work in the state’s agricultural industry, highlighting ongoing concerns about child labour, workplace safety, and economic hardship among farming families.
