Following the updated Nordic dietary guidelines may significantly reduce the risk of premature death, according to new research from Aarhus University. The study found that people who closely adhered to the recommendations had a 23% lower overall risk of death, along with fewer deaths from cancer and cardiovascular disease.
The guidelines, introduced in 2023, promote eating less red meat and added sugar while increasing consumption of whole grains, legumes, fish, and low-fat dairy. They were designed to improve public health while reducing environmental impact.
Researchers analyzed data from more than 76,000 adults participating in the Swedish Mammography Cohort and the Cohort of Swedish Men. Participants have reported diet and lifestyle habits since 1997.
Because the recommendations balance nutrition with sustainability, researchers say the findings suggest that climate-friendly diets can also deliver substantial public health benefits.
