Pre-workout supplements promoted for energy and athletic performance may be negatively affecting sleep among teenagers and young adults. A recent study analyzing behavioral data found that individuals aged 16 to 30 who used these supplements were more than twice as likely to report sleeping five hours or less per night compared to non-users. Health experts recommend significantly more rest for this age group.
These products often contain high amounts of caffeine and other stimulants, sometimes far exceeding the levels found in common beverages like coffee or soft drinks. Such ingredients can interfere with sleep cycles, especially when consumed later in the day.
Adequate sleep is essential for mental health, physical recovery, and cognitive performance. Researchers suggest raising awareness about the risks and encouraging safer usage habits, such as avoiding intake several hours before bedtime. They also highlight the need for better regulation and guidance around supplement consumption among young individuals.
