EFSA Sets Provisional Safe Intake Level for CBD in Foods

Scientists at the European Food Safety Authority have established a provisional safe intake level for cannabidiol (CBD) used as a novel food. The European Commission considers CBD a novel food if it meets regulatory requirements.

EFSA’s expert panel recommends a daily intake of about 2 mg for a 70 kg adult, incorporating a safety margin due to data gaps. This level applies only to high-purity CBD (at least 98%), free from nanoparticles, produced through safe processes, and with no genotoxic risks identified.

However, EFSA noted that CBD safety cannot yet be confirmed for individuals under 25, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those taking medications.

The authority will continue evaluating CBD applications individually, based on scientific evidence submitted by manufacturers.
