Infant Formula Sales Suspended Over Cereulide Contamination Risk

Lactalis and Danone have halted sales of selected infant and follow-on formulas after a safety issue linked to a contaminated raw ingredient. The action follows earlier recalls by Nestlé involving the possible presence of cereulide, a toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus that can cause food poisoning.

The issue was traced to arachidonic acid (ARA) oil used in formula production. Although initial testing showed compliant results, further analysis detected cereulide. In France, Lactalis recalled six lots of Picot infant formula sold in pharmacies and supermarkets, with expiration dates extending into early 2027.

In Singapore, authorities identified cereulide in two infant formula products, including one from a Danone-owned brand, leading to export suspensions. One mild illness was reported and has since resolved. Switzerland also recalled specific goat’s milk formulas distributed internationally.

Health experts warn that cereulide is not destroyed by heat and advise preparing powdered infant formula immediately before use to reduce risk.
