Are Two Seafood Portions Enough? Study Questions Omega-3 Intake Guidelines

Seafood is widely recommended as part of a healthy diet due to its high content of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, which support heart and overall health. Current dietary guidelines suggest consuming two portions of seafood per week, including one oily fish, to meet recommended intake levels.

This analysis examined whether these guidelines are sufficient. While farmed fish now dominate supply and show a higher omega-6 to omega-3 ratio due to industrial feeding practices, they still provide comparable or even higher EPA and DHA levels than wild fish. However, findings indicate that most combinations of two seafood portions fail to meet recommended omega-3 intake levels, particularly stricter UK targets.

For instance, only a single serving of Atlantic mackerel meets the full weekly requirement. Increasing consumption to three portions per week, including two oily fish, could significantly improve compliance with health recommendations and support better public health outcomes.
