Researchers at the University of Chicago have identified a new role for zeaxanthin, a plant-based nutrient known for eye health, in strengthening the body’s immune response against cancer. Published in Cell Reports Medicine, the study shows that zeaxanthin boosts the activity of CD8+ T cells—key immune cells responsible for targeting and destroying cancer cells.
The research, led by Jing Chen, found that zeaxanthin improves the stability of T-cell receptors, enhancing immune signaling and increasing the cells’ tumour-fighting ability. In preclinical models, the nutrient slowed tumour growth and significantly improved the effectiveness of immunotherapy treatments when used together.
Zeaxanthin, naturally found in foods like spinach and peppers, is already widely available as a supplement, making it a promising and accessible addition to cancer care. However, further clinical trials are needed to confirm its benefits in patients.
