Combining Plant Compounds May Dramatically Reduce Inflammation

Chronic inflammation, often silent, is linked to conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. A study led by Gen-ichiro Arimura at the Tokyo University of Science reveals that combining natural plant compounds can significantly enhance anti-inflammatory effects. Published in the journal Nutrients, the research explored how compounds from mint, eucalyptus, and chili peppers interact within immune cells.

Using macrophages, researchers tested menthol, 1,8-cineole, capsaicin, and β-eudesmol both individually and in combination. While capsaicin alone showed strong effects, combining it with menthol or cineole boosted anti-inflammatory activity by up to 100 times. This synergy works through multiple cellular pathways, including calcium signaling and receptor activation.

The findings suggest that everyday dietary combinations may deliver stronger health benefits than isolated compounds, opening new possibilities for functional foods and supplements. Further studies are needed to confirm these effects in humans.
