Bananas in Smoothies May Block Heart-Healthy Nutrients, Study Finds

A study from the University of California, Davis reveals that adding a banana to your smoothie can reduce the body’s absorption of heart-healthy flavanols by up to 84%. Published in Food and Function, the research shows that fruits high in the enzyme polyphenol oxidase (PPO), like bananas, interfere with flavanol absorption, while low-PPO fruits such as berries or pineapple do not.

Flavanols—found in foods like cocoa, apples, and grapes—support heart and brain health by improving blood flow and reducing inflammation. In the study, participants who drank a banana smoothie had significantly lower flavanol levels than those who consumed a berry smoothie or flavanol capsule.

Researchers suggest pairing flavanol-rich ingredients with low-PPO fruits like mango, orange, or yogurt-based blends. While bananas remain nutritious, the findings highlight how food combinations and preparation can greatly influence nutrient absorption.
