Beetroot Juice Reshapes Oral Microbiome and Lowers Blood Pressure in Older Adults

Regular intake of nitrate-rich beetroot juice may improve blood pressure and vascular health in older adults by altering oral bacteria, according to research from the University of Exeter published in Free Radical Biology and Medicine. The study compared 39 younger adults (under 30) with 36 older adults (60s–70s), who consumed concentrated beetroot juice shots or a nitrate-free placebo over alternating two-week periods.

Findings revealed that while both groups experienced changes in their oral microbiome, only the older group saw significant blood pressure reductions. In these participants, harmful bacteria such as Prevotella decreased, while beneficial strains like Neisseria increased, enhancing nitric oxide production essential for vascular function.

Since nitric oxide naturally declines with age, nitrate-rich vegetables such as beetroot, spinach, celery, fennel, and kale may help mitigate age-related cardiovascular risks. Researchers suggest further investigation into lifestyle and biological factors shaping these responses.
