A rare desert fruit, Nitraria roborowskii Kom, has demonstrated remarkable anti-diabetic properties in recent research, offering hope for safer, plant-based diabetes treatments. Long used in traditional Chinese medicine, the bright red “desert cherry” has now been scientifically shown to improve insulin sensitivity and restore metabolic balance in diabetic mice.
In a study by Qinghai University and the Northwest Institute of Plateau Biology, published in the Chinese Journal of Modern Applied Pharmacy, researchers tested a concentrated extract called NRK-C. Over seven weeks, treated mice showed 30–40% lower blood sugar, 50% better insulin response, and reduced oxidative stress by up to 60%. The extract works by reactivating the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, which regulates glucose and fat metabolism.
Lead researcher Dr. Yue Huilan said the results suggest a more holistic way to manage diabetes by restoring natural metabolic function rather than simply lowering blood sugar.
