A recent case report highlights the potential dangers of excessive intake of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus. While diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is relatively uncommon in such patients, these findings suggest that high consumption of sugary drinks may act as an overlooked trigger.
The report details two male patients who developed ketosis after consuming large quantities of aerated beverages daily. One, aged 33, consumed around 2.5 litres per day and developed ketosis without acidosis. The second, aged 18, reported an intake of 4 litres daily and presented with full-blown DKA.
Both individuals were treated with insulin therapy during hospitalization, which was later tapered. At follow-up, their blood sugar levels were controlled through oral medication or lifestyle changes. These cases underline the importance of moderating sugary drink intake to prevent severe metabolic complications in diabetes.
