FAO and EU Launch €20 Million NAVAC Initiative to Expand Access to Nutritious Aquatic Foods

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the European Union (EU) have launched the New Aquatic Food Value Chains for Sustainable Healthy Diets in Fragile Contexts (NAVAC) initiative to enhance access to safe, nutritious aquatic foods in Africa and Latin America. Running from 2025 to 2030 in Chad, Colombia, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, and South Sudan, NAVAC is backed by a €20 million EU contribution and $500,000 from FAO.

The program aims to boost sustainable aquatic food production, improve nutrition for vulnerable groups, and strengthen local economies through Blue Transformation innovations. Aligning with FAO’s Four Betters framework, NAVAC promotes integrated “net-to-plate” value chains that advance food security, resilience, and environmental sustainability while supporting the EU’s Global Gateway strategy.
