Researchers funded by FAPESP have found that green tea extract helped obese mice lose up to 30% of their body weight and improved insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism, even under carefully controlled lab conditions. Mice were fed a high-calorie “cafeteria” diet for four weeks, then treated with standardized green tea extract for 12 weeks. Despite continuing the same diet, treated mice showed significant weight loss, improved metabolic markers, and preserved muscle fiber structure. The extract increased the expression of genes essential for glucose uptake, including Insr, Irs1, Glut4, Hk1, and Pi3k, and restored lactate dehydrogenase activity. Importantly, green tea reduced fat selectively in obese mice without affecting lean ones, likely acting through adiponectin, a key metabolic regulator. While human trials are needed, researchers say regular, high-quality green tea consumption could serve as a safe, natural aid for obesity management and metabolic health.
