Green Tea’s Health Promise—and the Hidden Risks of Sugary Tea Drinks

A new comprehensive review highlights tea—particularly green tea—as a beverage linked to wide-ranging health benefits, including lower risks of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and several cancers. Rich in polyphenols such as catechins, green tea appears to support heart health by improving blood pressure and cholesterol, while also aiding metabolism and weight control. Research further suggests benefits for brain health, with regular tea consumption associated with slower cognitive decline and fewer markers linked to Alzheimer’s disease. In older adults, tea compounds may even help reduce age-related muscle loss.

However, the review draws a clear distinction between traditional brewed tea and modern processed tea products. Bottled teas and bubble teas often contain added sugars, artificial sweeteners, and preservatives that can undermine tea’s natural advantages. Concerns about contaminants and nutrient absorption are also noted, particularly with high intake. Overall, the findings suggest that moderate consumption of freshly brewed tea offers the greatest long-term health benefits, while heavily processed tea drinks should be consumed sparingly.
